Spring Paver Patio Maintenance Tips

2023 Belgard Paver Patio Winner

The changing seasons can wreak havoc on your paver patio’s appearance. But once the snow melts, springtime is the ideal time to refresh and help maintain the appearance of your patio. Here are some easy steps to clean your paver patio effectively:

Remove Debris

Start by removing any leaves, sticks, or other debris from the surface of your paver patio. Then, use a broom or a leaf blower to sweep away loose debris.

Pick the Correct Broom

Next, pair a coarse-bristle stable broom with your favorite paver cleanser. Although some people prefer to use a power washer to clean their patio due to the convenience, improper pressure can cause damage to the finish on the pavers. Therefore, we recommend a broom and cleanser instead to help protect the installation and integrity of your pavers.

Select the Right Cleaner

Use a suitable cleaner designed explicitly for pavers if you have any stains on your paver patio, such as oil or grease. Before applying it to your entire hardscaped space, remember to test the cleaner on a small area. Then, follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and use a stiff brush to scrub the stained areas. Rinse thoroughly with water after cleaning per the instructions.

Weed Removal & Prevention

Check for any weeds or grass growing between the paver joints and remove them by hand or using a weed killer that is safe for use on pavers. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Since weeds have the potential to shift pavers, sprinkling a granular weed preventative is an excellent solution to mitigating this problem before it even starts.

Re-sand

Over time, the sand between the paver joints may erode or wash away. To maintain the stability of your paver patio, replenish the joint sand by spreading new sand over the surface and sweeping it into the joints.

Apply a Sealant

To keep your pavers looking their best, Belgard recommends applying a sealant every three years. There are many different sealants available, from matte to gloss. However, it is essential to note that a sealant should not be applied more frequently than that Belgard recommends.

Regular Maintenance

Finally, to keep your paver patio clean and well-maintained, perform regular maintenance tasks throughout the year. Performing tasks such as re-sanding and sweeping will help to prolong the beauty of your outdoor space.

Cleaning your paver patio in the spring is a great way to start the outdoor season with a fresh and inviting outdoor space. Following these steps, you can effectively clean and maintain your paver patio for years of enjoyment.
